The lower the f-number, the more light the lens transmits, in other words, the faster the lens.A lens with a maximum aperture of f/1.4 is called all f/1.4 lens. It's faster than an f/2 lens. An f/2 lens is faster than an f/2.8 lens. And so on.Why are the specific numbers engraved on your camera rather than any other set of numbers? Because by knowing them - & using them- you can control your exposure more easily.
